Did We Know that Cutting out Carbs Can Cause Brain Fog in the Short Run and Lower Metabolism in the Long Run?

Let’s be real about the permanent or intermittent "ZERO CARB" lifestyle. While dropping carbohydrates might make the scale number plummet in the first week, we are mostly just shedding water weight, not actual body fat.

Biologically, our brain is a high-maintenance machine that explicitly prefers glucose to function. When we completely starve the body of its primary fuel source, we often trigger a spike in cortisol—the stress hormone.

Ironically, high cortisol levels can actually signal the body to store more fat in the abdominal area as a survival mechanism, making it harder to lose weight in the long run.

Beyond the immediate brain fog and the notorious "low-carb flu," eliminating this entire food group means we are likely cutting out essential fiber found in fruits, vegetables, and legumes. This is a disaster for our gut health, digestion, and heart health.

A sustainable diet isn't about demonizing a specific macronutrient; it is about fueling our body with high-quality, complex energy sources. Depriving ourselves of carbs or protein or fats and such to the point of misery usually leads to the "restrict-binge" cycle, which is far more damaging to our metabolism than eating a bowl of oatmeal.

Sustainable weight loss comes from consistency, a moderate calorie deficit, and adequate nutrition, not from fearing a potato. We need energy to move, think, and recover.

Life is simply too difficult to go through it without the serotonin boost that comes from a good slice of bread.

Because let’s be honest: nobody has ever looked back on their life with a genuine smile and said, "Man, I'm so glad I pretended that cauliflower rice tasted exactly like the real thing." 😎

Here are some healthy, delicious carb sources we should eat:

Oats (Steel-cut or Rolled): A powerhouse of soluble fiber (beta-glucan) that keeps us full for hours and helps regulate blood sugar.

Quinoa: Not just a carb, but a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids. It’s the overachiever of the grain world.

Sweet Potatoes: Packed with Vitamin A and fiber. They provide a slow, steady release of energy rather than a sugar spike.

Legumes (Lentils, Chickpeas, Black Beans): The ultimate two-for-one deal, offering high fiber and high protein to keep our metabolism humming.

Berries (Blueberries, Raspberries): Yes, fruit is a carb! These are low-glycemic, loaded with antioxidants, and satisfy that sweet tooth naturally.
