The Heart’s Secret Currency: Why We Need More Oxytocin

Nothing like Suzahdi Jackets Handcrafted with TLC, Red Wine, and Friendship

In a world that often feels so unnaturally digital and heartbreakingly divided, there is a quiet force waiting inside all of us mammals and even among bony fish (via isotocin) and amphibians via (mesotocin) to bring us back together.

For us mammals, it's called oxytocin. This term was in an an article of the "Why Dogs Love Us?" magazine. Grab a copy. It's worth the thoughtful read.

Often dubbed the "cuddle hormone" or the "bonding molecule," oxytocin is the chemical foundation of trust, empathy, and emotional connection. While the world feels so full of anger, bullying, lying, and such, the antidote isn't found in a complex algorithm or a dangerously unnatural store-bought remedy—it’s already wired into our DNA.

Why the "Natural Way" Matters:

In our fast-paced lives, we’ve developed a habit of seeking quick fixes for stress like in a glass or two or three of "Red,Red Wine". We love that song. But oxytocin works best via genuine, for-real - in our cases - human experiences.

Think of the times when you feel a warm glow and calmness after a talk with someone you trust or a leisurely, sweet, shared meal with your sweetheart. When we boost our oxytocin naturally, we don’t just feel better individually; we become more patient, caring, generous, and more open to the people around us, whether we know them or not. Interesting, right? Hmm... Covey was right: First, seek to understand, and then, to be understood.

Simple Ways to Boost to Get that "Love Hormone":

No prescription needed!

 * Human Touch: A sincere, eight-second or more hug or a simple pat on the back can trigger an immediate release, but ask for permission if it is not someone you know really well.

Meaningful Conversation: May we put our phones away and look people in the eye whom we are with... physically, and listen and talk, PLEASE. Feeling "heard" really matters in our perpetual-eyes-to-screen world.

 * Paws and Play: Spending time with our pets or even someone else's is one of the fastest ways to lower cortisol and spike the bonding hormones in both of you.

The Bottom Line: What the world needs now isn't more "stuff"; it needs more presence right here, right now.

By leaning into the small, soft moments of connection, we remind ourselves that we aren't meant to do life alone.

Let’s trade some of our screen time for the physical, here and now, "we" time.

The chemistry is already there—we just have to show up for it.
